Kappenabzeichen on postcards

IR 99

In the Roundtrip series, the regiment was already featured once, when I described Znaim, the city of the headquarters of the regiment cadre. Then I uploaded the plate badge showing the panorama. In this post the panorama is shown on the lower edge of the postcard. The post, on the other hand, deals more with the regiment’s beautiful enamel badge. The inscription refers to the battle of Aspern fought on May 21, 1809. The 99th regiment distinguished itself in the victorious battle. This battle became also the regiment’s memorial day.

The crew of the 99th South Moravian Infantry Regiment was two-thirds German and one-third Czech. The command and battalions of the regiment were stationed in Vienna at the outbreak of the war. They were in the II. corps assigned to the 4th Infantry Division. They served on the Russian front in the first half of the war belonging the 1st Austro-Hungarian army. They were protecting the vicinity of Kraków, then after the breakthrough in Gorlice the regiment moved to the Styr river. In the summer of 1916, the regiment was assigned to the German army group Linsingen and fought in the area of Kowel. In the fall of 1917, they were sent to the XXVI. corps in Tyrol.
