Kappenabzeichen on postcards

IR 76

The majority of its staff, recruited from the counties of Vas, Sopron and Moson of Western Hungary, were native speakers of German, a third were Hungarian, and there were also Croatians in the regiment. The command of the regiment was in Sopron. The regiment’s memorial on Deák Square preserves the memory of 8,625 soldiers killed in action. The strong Austrian connection can be seen in the fact that the tradition preservation group of the regiment operates in Burgenland.

The regimental Kappenabzeichen depicts charging bucks. The motif also decorates the commemorative monument. Script of the round badge “Semper Ubique Fidelis Maria Anna 1885”: Always and everywhere faithful to Maria Anna 1885.

So far, I have not been able to trace the origin of the inscription. The regiment was founded in 1860. For the year 1885, the available sources do not know of any special events. The most likely about the name is that it is the Spanish infant Maria Anna Habsburg, who lived between 1606 and 1646 and was the spouse of Emperor and King Ferdinand III. However, I did not find any connection between the duchesse and the regiment.
